Introduction In a country as diverse and culturally rich as Indonesia, instilling national awareness and pride among young citizens is of paramount importance, especially in the face of rapid globalization, which can sometimes overshadow local traditions and values (Ningsih, 2. With its intricate tapestry of languages, customs, and arts. Indonesia faces the challenge of preserving cultural heritage across generations. Connecting elementary school students with their Indonesian roots thus becomes a critical aspect of fostering a sense of national identity and belonging. Traditional cultural elements, such as wayang . , hold unique potential in addressing this need, particularly when integrated into modern educational media like animated cartoons, which are engaging and familiar formats for todayAos youth (Ade Putra, 2. Historically, wayang has been an essential part of Indonesian cultural life, not only as a form of artistic expression but also as a medium for conveying moral and ethical lessons (Sempa, 2. Originating from Java and evolving over centuries, wayang performances use stories drawn from the Mahabharata and Ramayana epics, which have been adapted to incorporate Indonesian values and local legends. These stories reflect themes of courage, loyalty, justice, and humility, making wayang an effective tool for instilling character education among younger generations (Ningsih. Modern adaptations of wayang into animated formats provide a practical way to make these age-old lessons accessible and engaging for students in elementary schools, helping to bridge traditional culture with contemporary learning methods. The visual appeal of cartoons aligns well with the developmental stage of elementary-aged children, who are particularly receptive to visual storytelling. By reimagining wayang characters in animated formats, educators can capture the attention of young learners and foster their appreciation for Indonesian history, values, and identity (Francis, 2. This approach not only enhances learning by making it more interactive but also strengthens the role of wayang as a cultural cornerstone in Indonesian society, ensuring that the heritage is preserved and appreciated by future generations. For instance, well-known wayang characters like Arjuna and Gatotkaca can be used to introduce students to Indonesian values and principles through relatable, modern storytelling that reflects their significance in Indonesian history and folklore (Ade Putra, 2. Thus, cartoon adaptations of wayang characters and stories can serve as a dynamic tool to impart a deeper understanding of national identity. Through animated narratives, students can explore universal themes often embodied in wayang characters, such as bravery, loyalty, and justice. This paper seeks to explore the use of cartoon wayang as a strategy for instilling national awareness in Indonesian elementary students. By examining the effectiveness of this approach, we aim to identify methods for enriching cultural education in Indonesia, helping young Indonesians develop a strong sense of identity and pride in their national heritage. Literature Review Education aimed at instilling national awareness in elementary school students in Indonesia is crucial for shaping identity and fostering patriotism from an early age. Numerous studies emphasize the importance of using creative and relevant teaching strategies to help students internalize these values. Visual storytelling media, such as Wayang cartoons, are particularly effective as they carry strong moral and cultural values, which make it easier for students to grasp concepts of nationalism and patriotism. The Use of Visual Media in Education Visual media has proven to be an effective method in early childhood education, as it is more engaging and supports long-term retention. Research suggests that animation or cartoons help children understand and internalize abstract concepts, including nationalism. In this case. Wayang cartoons not only attract attention but also visually convey cultural values. Studies indicate that children respond well to enjoyable visual content with humorous elements, and Wayang has the potential to fulfill these preferences. 2 Wayang Cartoons as Cultural and Identity Representation Wayang, as a cultural symbol of Indonesia, embodies moral lessons that can be instilled in children. Characters in Wayang, such as Arjuna. Bima, and Semar, not only represent heroic figures but also reflect fundamental life principles like honesty, bravery, and hard work. By modernizing these figures through cartoons, children can understand these values in a relatable and engaging context. This approach aligns with constructivist learning theory, where students build new knowledge by connecting it to their own experiences. 3 Importance of Early National Awareness Developing national awareness from an early age is important because it can help create citizens committed to national values. Studies indicate that children introduced to cultural values through interactive media are more likely to develop a sense of love and pride for their country. Wayang cartoons, as a blend of education and entertainment, have the potential to provide a joyful and meaningful learning experience. Research shows that students who engage with culturally based learning materials tend to retain the values taught due to emotional connections. 4 Implementing Wayang Cartoons in Elementary School Curriculum Integrating Wayang cartoons into the elementary school curriculum in Indonesia could also help bridge the gap between tradition and the younger generation. Previous studies reveal that local culture-based education can enhance students' interest in learning about their own history and traditions. This approach can also enrich students' knowledge of Indonesia's cultural diversity and strengthen national identity amid globalization. Materials and Methods Materials The primary material used in this study is a series of selected Wayang cartoon episodes adapted for children. The Wayang episodes focus on popular characters such as Arjuna. Bima, and Semar and include lessons on moral values and cultural teachings. Each episode was chosen to highlight different aspects of Indonesian cultural heritage, such as bravery, honesty, respect, and teamwork. Complementary materials include worksheets and reflection questions designed to prompt students to express and discuss the values depicted in the cartoons. Curriculum Integration To effectively integrate wayang into the school curriculum, educators will develop lesson plans that incorporate the animated wayang stories into subjects such as history, arts, and social studies. This integration will enable students to explore the values and morals conveyed in the wayang narratives, fostering discussions about national identity, culture, and ethics. Training for Educators Teacher training sessions will be organized to equip educators with the skills to effectively deliver lessons centered around wayang cartoons. These sessions will focus on: o The cultural significance of wayang in Indonesian heritage. o Techniques for using animated content to teach national values. o Strategies for facilitating discussions that encourage critical thinking about national identity. Student Engagement Activities After the initial introduction and training, various engaging activities will be organized for students, such as: o Workshops: Hands-on workshops where students can create their own wayang puppets and perform stories, reinforcing their understanding of character traits and cultural values. o Competitions: Organizing competitions such as storytelling contests, where students can retell wayang tales in their own words, encouraging creativity and deeper comprehension of the stories' themes. Monitoring and Evaluation To ensure the effectiveness of the program, continuous monitoring and evaluation will be conducted. This includes: o Feedback Surveys: Collecting feedback from students and teachers regarding their experiences with the wayang curriculum and activities. o Assessments: Evaluating student understanding of the cultural themes and values presented through the wayang cartoons and how it influences their sense of national identity. Sustainability and Follow-up Sulistya A et al. / International Journal of Ethno-Sciences and Education Research.
