Indonesia REVIEW OPEN ACCESS ABSTRACT Introduction: Menopause is a normal phase in a woman's life marked by the discontinuation of menstruation due to hormonal changes, often accompanied by sleep disturbances. These sleep disturbances can negatively impact health and well-being. The global prevalence of sleep disturbances among postmenopausal women is quite significant. Several studies have shown that hypnosis therapy can improve sleep quality in menopausal and postmenopausal women. This review aims to evaluate the effects and benefits of hypnosis therapy on sleep disturbances in menopausal and postmenopausal women through a literature review. We also analyze how various media are used in hypnosis therapy Methods: This study uses a literature review method by accessing relevant articles through electronic databases such as PubMed. Science Direct, and Google Scholar, focusing on publications from the last 10 years. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied in selecting the Results: Five studies were analyzed, showing that hypnosis therapy using various research methods and types of hypnosis effectively addresses sleep disturbances in menopausal and postmenopausal women. However, concerns about the risks and impacts of hormone therapy often cause hesitation. Understanding how various symptoms interact and tailoring treatment to specific symptoms is essential. Additionally, sleep hygiene, self-hypnosis, meditation, and exercise play important roles for menopausal women experiencing sleep disturbances 5,7 Hypnosis therapy holds the potential for addressing sleep disturbances in menopausal women. Several studies have investigated the efficacy of self-hypnosis in alleviating sleep disturbances in this population, showing improvements in sleep quality and duration. 8-10 Hypnosis aims to ease symptoms through self-hypnosis training, demonstrating benefits for both acute and chronic insomnia in menopausal women. Numerous studies have supported the use of hypnosis in reducing various physical and mental disorders, making it an effective nonpharmacological therapy for health issues. Examples include using hypnosis to improve sleep quality in general samples, enhance mental health in cancer patients, and support women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum periods. Therefore, we are interested in conducting a literature review study on hypnosis therapy for sleep disturbances, focusing on menopausal and postmenopausal women. METHOD The method we used in this study is a literature review. This article discusses the effects of hypnosis therapy on sleep disturbances in menopausal and postmenopausal women based on a literature review. The literature was accessed through electronic databases such as PubMed. Science Direct, and Google Scholar, with the keywords AuhypnosisAy. Auhypnosis therapyAy. Aumenopausal womenAy. The inclusion criteria for this study were articles published within the last 10 years, related to hypnosis therapy for sleep disturbances, and focusing on menopausal and postmenopausal women as the sample population. The exclusion criteria were articles published more than 10 years ago, not related to hypnosis therapy for sleep disturbances, and those not focused on menopausal and postmenopausal women as the sample population. RESULT Based on our literature search, we identified 10 articles, of which we excluded 5 because they did not cover the topic of hypnosis therapy for sleep disorders in menopausal women. The first literature review is an experimental study by Cordi et . in Switzerland, which aimed to investigate the potential of hypnosis therapy to improve slow-wave sleep (SWS) and cognitive function in elderly women, considering the decline in sleep quality and SWS with age. The population consisted of 39 elderly women aged 60-82, who listened to hypnosis suggestions or control tapes before sleep while their brain activity was recorded. The results showed that hypnosis therapy enhances sleep quality and cognitive function among elderly women. 5 The findings indicated a 57% rise in slowwave sleep (SWS) among participants in the treatment group compared to those in the control group, along with cognitive and brain function recovery. This study highlights the potential benefits of hypnosis as an alternative to improving sleep quality in menopausal women. It underscores the potential of psychological interventions using hypnosis therapy to enhance sleep and cognitive function in the elderly and to provide a basis for future studies on sleep disturbances and the long-term benefits of hypnosis in daily life. The second literature review is an experimental study by Elkins et al. in the United States, which aimed to explore the effectiveness of hypnosis interventions in improving sleep quality in postmenopausal women with sleep disturbances. The sample population included 90 postmenopausal women. The first group had 5 face-to-face sessions, the second group had 3 face-to-face sessions, the third group had 5 phone calls with self-hypnosis, and the fourth group had 3 phone calls with self-hypnosis. The findings showed a significant decrease in poor sleep quality and enhanced sleep duration in all groups. Most women demonstrated clinical improvement in sleep duration. This study indicated that hypnosis is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for sleep problems and hot flashes in menopausal women. Therefore, in this context, the focus will be more on non-pharmacological therapies, such as hypnosis therapy. Hypnotherapy is the application of hypnosis in treating mental disorders and alleviating physical ailments. Hypnosis is known as an economical and secure approach with extensive advantages for managing a range of health concerns, including sleep disturbances in menopausal and postmenopausal women. Hypnosis has the potential to improve sleep quality and reduce sleep disturbances by inducing a deep state of relaxation, reducing anxiety and stress levels, altering pain perception, and promoting positive suggestions for better sleep. The effectiveness of hypnosis in managing insomnia can be enhanced with common therapeutic components such as therapist contact, the expectation of improvement, and a focus on pleasant internal sensations. Some studies also state that hypnosis has the potential to enhance sleep quality in elderly women who have experienced Hypnotherapy is the application of hypnosis in treating mental disorders and alleviating physical ailments. The research methods used range from experimental trials and quasiexperiments to retrospective studies. The interventions for hypnosis therapy vary, including face-to-face sessions with a therapist, supervised group chats, phone sessions, smartphone applications, and audio-visual hypnosis. The use of teletherapy hypnosis has become more popular following the COVID-19 Hypnosis therapy also has the potential to regulate fundamental physiological functions such as metabolism, cardiovascular activity, and immunity through its effects on the endocrine and autonomic nervous systems. This literature review provides a strong foundation for further research and the application of hypnosis therapy in women's health during critical life stages such as menopause and postmenopause, given the limited studies on this topic.
