In Indonesia, the National Sharia CouncilAeMajelis Ulama Indonesia (DSN-MUI) issued Fatwa No. 140/2021, which strictly prohibits the use of cryptocurrency as a currency on the grounds that it does not fulfill the essential characteristics of money under Shariah. The fatwa emphasizes that cryptocurrency contains elements of gharar and maysir due to its extreme volatility and absence of intrinsic value.
